Every fall since 1978, the Mathematics & Statistics Division has held a conference designed specifically to attract the interest of undergraduate students.

This year’s Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) Conference will be held at Cape Breton University, on October 17 and 18, 2025.

Registration is now open and will close on October 18, 2025.

Abstract Submission is open and submission deadline is October 05, 2025

Plenary invited speakers include:

  • Field Lecture (Statistics): Neil Spencer (University of Connecticut)
  • Sedgwick Lecture: Rita Orji (Dalhousie University)

The Mathematics & Statistics Division have published a variety of papers and reports, as well as a booklet to help students prepare for university calculus and a commemorative book.

Preparing for University Calculus

The booklet “Preparing for University Calculus” is written by a group of mathematics instructors at Atlantic Canadian universities. It is intended to familiarize students entering university, or about to take a standard university calculus course for the first time, with the mathematical background that will be expected.

Blundon Book

“Experiences in Problem Solving: A W.J. Blundon Commemorative” is a collection of mathematical problem-solving contributions by W.J. Blundon, compiled by Professors Roland Eddy and Michael Parmenter of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Originally published in 1994, this book honors the legacy of W.J. Blundon, a prominent figure in Newfoundland education who served as Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Memorial University from 1948 to 1976.

Although long out of print, the copyright holder, Science Atlantic, approved the free distribution of the book in 2022. This includes republishing in accessible HTML funded by the book’s original proceeds.

Annual Problem Solving Competition

The Science Atlantic Mathematics Competition is an annual event challenging undergraduate students from Atlantic Canadian universities. Teams of two engage in a three-hour examination, solving mathematical problems. This competition, held during the Science Atlantic Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science conference, offers prizes for top-performing teams.

Thanks to the support of our generous conference sponsors, each year Mathematics & Statistics recognizes the achievements of some of Atlantic Canada’s top undergraduate and graduate MSCS students through a variety of awards.

About

The Mathematics & Statistics Division representatives include mathematicians and statisticians from across the Atlantic region.

Our annual conference, held jointly with Computer Science, is designed to attract the attention of undergraduate students, and provides a venue at which students and faculty can network, present research and share ideas. The conference features plenary talks in both mathematics (the Blundon lecture) and statistics (the Fields lecture). The Blundon lecture is named for Professor W.J. Blundon, the first head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Memorial University of Newfoundland, who was a prominent figure in mathematics and educational circles in Atlantic Canada for many years. The conference also hosts a problem-solving competition for teams of undergraduate students from Atlantic Canadian universities.

We are also interested in issues related to mathematics education, including curriculum and pedagogy in schools and universities.
