Biography
Cyr Couturier (BSc,University of New Brunswick; MSc, Dalhousie University) has been inducted into the Science Atlantic Hall of Fame as one of two Outstanding Contributing Members for 2013.
Mr. Couturier attended his first APICS (now Science Atlantic) Biology Conference in 1980, as President of the UNB Saint John Marine Biology Student Society. In 1994, he became an aquaculture faculty member at Memorial University’s Marine Institute and began attending the student conferences of the newly formed APICS Aquaculture Committee.
Mr. Couturier’s efforts with Science Atlantic have been to encourage undergraduate and graduate students to attend the conferences, find resources for student awards and travel bursaries, and encourage young people to pursue careers in aquaculture science. Several of his graduate students have won awards at the annual Science Atlantic student conference, of which Cyr is justly proud. In an interview following his induction into the Hall of Fame, Couturier commented, “the biggest reward for me is mentoring students and seeing them pursue careers in marine biology, aquaculture, fisheries or environmental science. During his nearly 20 years with Science Atlantic, Couturier has been both Secretary and Chair of the Science Atlantic (then APICS) Aquaculture Committee. As Chair, he introduced a motion to Council to expand the mandate of the Aquaculture Committee to include fisheries, which was unanimously approved. In keeping with his dedication to encouraging and supporting students, he has been the judging coordinator for the annual conference’s student awards for over a decade. Additionally, he has represented Science Atlantic at regional meetings of the Atlantic Coastal Zone Information Steering Committee (ACZISC) since the early 2000s.
Cyr’s commitment to the aquaculture industry and community extends well beyond his involvement with Science Atlantic. For three terms, Couturier was Executive Director for the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association. He is a past President of both the Aquaculture Association of Canada and the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association. Currently, he is Director and Executive Officer for the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance, as well as the President of the Réseau de développement économique et d’employabilité de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador (RDÉETNL). He is a technical advisor to several federal government departments on sustainable aquaculture issues, including Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Human Resources Development Canada and others.
Cyr has published in excess of 80 technical, industrial, peer-reviewed, and science and policy commentary articles, in English, French and Norwegian. He is a frequent invited speaker and technical expert (in both French and English) at regional, national, and international symposia on aquaculture and fisheries related topics.
With 30 years of experience in the aquaculture sector, we are pleased to recognize Cyr Couturier for his work as a research scientist, as Chair of the Aquaculture and Fisheries Committee, and for his many other contributions to Science Atlantic.

M. Couturier assiste à sa première conférence sur la biologie de Science Atlantique (anciennement le Conseil des provinces atlantiques pour les sciences ou CIPAS) en 1980, à titre de président de la Marine Biology Student Society du campus de Saint John de l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick. En 1994, il devient membre du corps professoral du Marine Institute de l’Université Memorial, où il enseigne l’aquaculture, et commence à assister aux conférences pour étudiants du tout nouveau comité d’aquaculture du CIPAS.

Actif au sein de Science Atlantique depuis près de 20 ans, M. Couturier a été secrétaire, puis président du comité d’aquaculture. À titre de président de ce comité, il présente au conseil une motion, adoptée à l’unanimité, proposant d’élargir le mandat du comité afin d’y inclure les pêches. Sa volonté d’encourager et de soutenir les étudiants l’amène également à assumer le rôle de coordonnateur des juges pour les prix étudiants de la conférence annuelle pendant plus d’une décennie. De plus, il représente Science Atlantique aux réunions régionales du Comité consultatif de l’information sur les zones côtières de l’Atlantique (ACZISC) depuis le début des années 2000.
L’engagement de M. Couturier envers l’industrie et le milieu aquacoles est loin de se limiter à sa participation aux activités de Science Atlantique. Pendant trois mandats, il est directeur général de la Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA). Ancien président de l’Association aquacole du Canada (AAC) et de la NAIA, il est actuellement directeur et cadre supérieur de l’Alliance de l’industrie canadienne de l’aquaculture (AICA), ainsi que président du Réseau de développement économique et d’employabilité de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador (RDÉETNL). M. Couturier est conseiller technique en aquaculture durable auprès de plusieurs ministères fédéraux, dont Environnement Canada, Pêches et Océans Canada et Développement des ressources humaines Canada.
Il a publié plus de 80 articles techniques, industriels, évalués par des pairs, scientifiques et sur les politiques, tant en anglais qu’en français et en norvégien. Il participe souvent à des symposiums régionaux, nationaux et internationaux sur l’aquaculture et les pêches à titre de conférencier invité et spécialiste technique (en français et en anglais).
Nous sommes heureux de souligner les quelque 30 années d’expérience dans le domaine de l’aquaculture de Cyr Couturier et son travail en tant que chercheur et à la présidence du comité d’aquaculture et des pêches, de même que sa contribution exceptionnelle à Science Atlantique à bien d’autres égards.
