Thank you for representing your institution on
a Science Atlantic Division Committee!
Science Atlantic is a federally incorporated, charitable association representing 18 post-secondary institutions in Atlantic Canada. We have been providing networking and learning opportunities for students and faculty in the Atlantic region since 1962, most notably through our academic student conferences.
As the discipline representative for your institution, you are the connection point between your department and Science Atlantic. You can ensure smooth communication by:
- Staying up-to-date with Science Atlantic news and promoting opportunities to students and faculty.
- Attending your discipline’s annual conference and encouraging student participation.
- Interacting and fostering communication with colleagues from other institutions.
- Sharing Science Atlantic information with your department and your school’s information with Science Atlantic representatives from other schools.
Stay in the Know and Get Involved!
Celebrate 60 years of Science Atlantic!
Over the past six decades, the organization has evolved and grown, now representing 18 post-secondary institutions from all four Atlantic provinces! To celebrate each institution’s participation in Science Atlantic, we are hosting a tree dedication event on each campus, Fall of 2021. See details here.
Help Strengthen our Organization
We spoke with Atlantic Canadian faculty about their experiences in the post-secondary STEM community.
Results from this project were presented at the 2020 AMM, where breakout groups brainstormed ways to act on the results.
We are looking for your help to build on these ideas. Check out our Broadening Horizons Info Hub for updates and calls for volunteers.
**Review the organizational chart.
Institutional Representatives (Deans or Science or equivalent) from the member institutions hold the vote for determining the direction of the organization. They annually elect a Board of Directors to oversee the business of the organization. The Institutional Representatives meet annually to monitor committee activities and to discuss issues of general concern.
The Board consists of a Chair, Chair Elect or Past-Chair, Treasurer, three Institutional Representatives, three Committee Chairs, and two members-at-large. The Board meets monthly to discuss financial concerns and to regulate the strategic direction of the organization.
The Strategic Planning Committee
The Strategic Planning Committee’s purpose is to assist the Board and Executive Director in setting and maintaining the strategic direction for Science Atlantic and to empower the strategic planning action committees to carry out their activities in support of the goals of the 2018-2022 Strategic Plan
Action Committees have been developed to implement tactics required to execute the three strategic priorities: 1) Sustainable and Inclusive Governance, 2) Partnerships and Community, and 3) Leadership and Empowerment.
Standing committees in various divisions report to the Board and are dedicated to student and faculty engagement through the organization of activities including annual conferences and speaker tours. Committees set their own goals and organize their own activities based on the requirements of their particular area of science, subject to approval of the Board.
Committee members are appointed by their department or dean. At the discretion of the committee, other persons may participate in its activities and deliberations without voting privileges. Each committee shall elect an Executive consisting of a Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary.
