Science Atlantic Outstanding Member, 2013

Membre exceptionnel 2013 de Science Atlantique

Biography

Dr. Edgar G. Goodaire (BSc, University of Toronto; PhD, University of British Columbia) has been inducted into the Science Atlantic Hall of Fame as one of two Outstanding Members for 2013.

This past year, Dr. Goodaire stepped down as Memorial University’s representative to the Science Atlantic (formerly APICS) Mathematics and Statistics Committee, and retired in August 2013 after 40 years of service at Memorial.

Dr. Goodaire served on the Mathematics and Statistics Committee since 1992. During his tenure, he was a strong advocate of Science Atlantic and provided invaluable support and leadership, serving as Secretary to the Committee from 1992 to 1994, Vice Chair from 1997 to 2000, and Chair from 2000 to 2007. Dr. Goodaire also took a lead role in organizing the APICS Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science conference when it was held at Memorial University in 1981 and again in 1999.

Dr. Goodaire is a respected member of the community of Canadian mathematicians, having published five books and over 80 research papers. His most recent work, Linear Algebra: Pure and Applied, appeared in late 2013.

During Dr. Goodaire’s term as Chair, the committee was deeply involved in providing input and criticism regarding implementation of a new high school mathematics curriculum in Atlantic Canada. A report published by the committee in 2002 received significant media interest as well as reaction from the provincial Departments of Education. The dialogue from this review resulted in number of changes to improve the new curriculum.

A decade earlier, as chief editor, Dr. Goodaire was the driving force behind the book Experiences in Problem Solving, a mathematical problem solving text which was published in 1994 by the APICS Mathematics and Statistics Committee.

In addition to his induction to the Science Atlantic Hall of Fame, the Canadian Mathematical Society recognized him with their Distinguished Service Award in 2004 for serving the society for over 30 years, including as Treasurer, Vice-President, and co-editor of the Canadian Mathematical Bulletin. Dr. Goodaire is also a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America, and spent five years (two as chair) sitting on NSERC’s Scientific Publications Grants Selection Committee.

The members of the Mathematics and Statistics Committee were unanimous in their nomination of Dr. Goodaire for the Science Atlantic Outstanding Member Award. We are pleased to recognize him for his many years of service to Science Atlantic and the larger mathematics community.

Biographie
