Enthusiastic students returning to campus reminds us of the hope and challenges that September brings. September returns us to a comfortable routine and structure with classes and labs; assignments and exams. For Science Atlantic, there are new prospects, developing challenges, and a return to comfortable routine.
An exciting year of undergraduate conferences will kick off with the 2016 Atlantic Universities Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Conference at Cape Breton University and the 66th Atlantic Universities Geoscience Conference (AUGC) at Acadia University. Each conference gives keen undergraduate researchers a chance to talk to colleagues and established researchers about the discoveries they have made.
The Nutrition Committee joins Science Atlantic as our newest discipline committee. Representatives met and developed a plan over the past winter. Their goal is to launch a student conference next year. Thank you to Marcia English for being the inaugural Chair.
Watch the Science Atlantic website and social media feeds (Twitter, Facebook) for news of student awards. Last year more than 80 students were recognized for their outstanding contributions at Science Atlantic conferences. All of these students are acknowledged in the 2015-16 Student Awards Yearbook.
Students will find useful ideas on presenting at a conference, fundraising for conferences, selecting a graduate program, and networking with colleagues on the student page.
The Science Atlantic Hall of Fame will recognize three outstanding contributors, all with a strong sense of community and willingness to work hard to support science in the region. Welcome and congratulations to former Chair of Science Atlantic and an important repository of Science Atlantic history, Rob Raeside; former Chair of the Mathematics and Statistics Committee, Robert Dawson; and former Chair of the Earth Science Committee, Milton Graves. Watch for recognition events this fall.
A major development at the Science Atlantic office is AFRED, the Atlantic Facilities and Research Equipment Database. AFRED will make information about equipment and facilities easily available to researchers and industry so that exciting science and new collaborations can occur. Patty King and her team have put a lot of hard work into developing the model, then securing funding and now populating the database. They will be visiting your campus again soon as they work with early adopters.
Like most Septembers, there are exciting new initiatives and a comforting level of normalcy.
